What is lost? What is lost in our families?
I have been really thinking about this a lot lately! Why are family's so different now than they were?
Time. I remember when I was a little girl my grandmother would let me help with EVERYTHING! She never made me feel like I was in the way. I remember her teaching me how to dust. ( Oh how I still love the smell of Pledge! ) I remember picking dandelion greens with her for salad. I remember making bread with her! She always made us cover up our hair!
I am guilty of rushing. I am guilty of telling my kids "just let me do it." But what will they learn? What will they remember?
Family dinners! Oh Lord we had the biggest family dinners! My grandparents lived in an old farm house more than enough room for all of us! The young kids would go play while every one cooked! The kids ate on the steps and the adults ate at the table. Just the way we liked it. Gram and Pap were never rich, but your tummy was always full and you were always grateful! What a great way to spend time together! At home we ALWAYS sat down at the table! It didn't matter if we were having mac and cheese and hot dogs everyone sat! Dinner was the same time everyday with out fell. It was a time to reconnect as a family.
I am guilty of not making my family sit at the table..which anyone that knows me..knows I hate this flaw of mine! But when we do sit we play "one good thing, one bad thing." Everyone takes a turn telling us about one good thing about their day and one bad thing. Our biggest problem is we need a huge table and a large space to fit my family of 7! But oh how I miss the big family dinners with everyone!
Tv. Yeppers I am saying it! When I was young..we had cartoons on Saturday morning ONLY! The rest was spent playing! Now tv shows for kids dominate the tv from 8-4 EVERY.SINGLE.DAY! If it isn't TV then it is the computer! I remember sitting as a family and watching a show after bath time as a family. Forget it! There isn't much in the way of a family show anymore!
I try to make my kids stick to websites that teach them something like starfall! But there are lots of times where the go on and just play useless crap games and sometimes when I am tired I just give up! Terrible I know!
I guess we are losing our family's because we think we know better than our parents and our grandparents..the reality of that is a big resounding "NO" We don't.
Remember what I said about small goals? Do some for you..do some for you family too. Spend time together. Love each other.
God gave you today...make it count!
